If 2023 is remembered for the frenzy that surrounded ChatGPT, is it the OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman or the Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella that will become the case study for how to intelligently navigate the world of AI? So who else might business school students learn from in the past year? The author asked business school deans and professors which individuals stood out for them in 2023 as a lesson in leadership. Here are 13 leaders to learn from in 2023, starting with those that got it right.
Satya Nadella – Executive Chairman and CEO of Microsoft. What might we learn from Satya Nadella? Leadership requires vision, the courage to make big bets, the humility to collaborate, and the energy to lead corporate transformation and renewal.
Fran Drescher – Actress and National President of the Screen Actors Guild. The president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTA), Fran Drescher, led her union of 160,000 in contract negotiations and in solidarity with Writers Guild of America. Drescher led as a volunteer president to negotiate for a contract that studio executives seemed determined to fight. The negotiations were not simply for a fairer wage, but also about the threat of streaming platform accountability and AI technology.
Jens Stoltenberg – Secretary General of NATO. Stoltenberg has met the complexity and seriousness of his position with adept diplomacy, excellent political intuition, and a razor-sharp focus on keeping the alliance together over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Many leadership lessons can be derived from his remarkable ability to maintain a firm and unequivocal yet utmost diplomatic position when faced with disruptions and protests from strong world leaders like Donald Trump, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Xi Jinping.
The others are: Robert A. Brown – President Emeritus of Boston University; Jacinda Ardern – Former Prime Minister of New Zealand; and Tim Cook – CEO of Apple
Masterclasses in misleadership are:
Elon Musk – CEO of X (formerly Twitter). While we can talk alot about Elon’s offences as bad leadership qualities no matter the situation. Elon Musk needs to learn (as do we) that “what got you here, will not get you there.” Elon’s leadership approach fits or aligns well with entrepreneurial, hyper-growth, cutting-edge technologies – not a mature and struggling social media company.
Stockton Rush – Former CEO of OceanGate: In June this year, the Titan submersible imploded on its journey to the wreck of the Titanic, killing five people, including Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate. This tragedy is a harrowing reminder of the leadership risks that loom when positivity turns pathological, and leaders fail to embrace the power or humility of doubt.
Luis Rubiales – former President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Luis Rubailes provided valuable lessons this year on what leaders should not do. The world saw Rubiales kissing the Women’s Football World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony. The player mentioned that she did not consent to this kiss. Since the incident and up until his suspension, Rubiales followed a recipe for failure in handling a scandal that he was involved in. The first ingredient in his failure recipe was downplaying and denying misconduct. The second ingredient was the lack of integrity in how the RFEF handled the situation.
The other are: Suella Braverman – Former Home Secretary of the UK government.
